Amuru woman Member of Parliament Lucy Akello has said an unidentified people armed with iron bars on Monday morning unsuccessfully attempted to break into her house.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Akello said.
“Dear Friends, thanks for your prayers, I survived death in the early morning around 2:30 and 3:30 am as I was attacked by three goons, who came to my house and tried for several hours to break into the house.”
Ms Akello lives in Layibi Division in Gulu municipality.
The legislator said after unsuccessfully trying to force their way into her house, the unidentified persons started throwing stones on her roof.
“They couldn’t get in [the house] and hence resorted to forceful means. They threw stones into the house and broke the door glasses. Whatever their motive was, they have been defeated and I a [sic] seriously watching them.”
Akello joined parliament in November 2014 after defeating Ms Jane Francesca Okili in a hotly contested by election. The Amuru seat had fallen vacant after the resignation of the then Member of Parliament and minister of state, Betty Bigombe. Bigombe is now a director at the World Bank in Washington, DC.
Akello who is contesting under the FDC is against tussling it out with NRM’s Okilli.
Speaking to Acholi Times in an interview on Monday, the legislator claimed, without providing the evidence, that the Monday morning attack was not a simple robbery but was aimed at harming her.
“I woke up to the sound of a bang on my door; I could clearly hear about three people struggling to open the door of my house. I was alone while a painter was sleeping in the garage. After they failed to open, they threw stones at the window shattering glasses,” she said
She said the attempt was politically motivated by people against her leadership as Amuru Woman MP and also meant to intimidate her.
“I had a vehicle parked outside my house and if these people where real thieves, they should have thought of removing its spare parts or the whole vehicle, why did they come to my house, why….?” she reasoned.
She said she is now contemplating applying to the police to have cops to guard her house.
She has registered a case of attempted robbery at Gulu Central Police station under file number SD44/11/01/2016.
Gulu District Police Commander, Mr Martin Okoyo confirmed to Acholi Times in a telephone interview on Tuesday that Akello had registered a case.
