Police in Gulu are holding a 34 year-old man who has been masquerading as a lawyer and extorting money.
Sam Omona, a resident of Gulu municipality was arrested over the weekend following complaints from people he had allegedly conned off money on grounds that he would help them win their cases in court.
Omona is alleged to have extorted 6 million shillings from members of the family of Pastor Onen Denis Ochen who had been remanded at Gulu Central Prison for defilement by Gulu Resident Judge. Justice Margaret Mutonyi,
Omona is said to have duped the family into giving him the money by deceiving them that he would make Justice Mutonyi to drop the case.
When Pastor Ochen was released from prison on December 7 last year, he started following up on the payment his family had made and reported the matter to police prompting Omona’s arrest.
Sources at Gulu High court who spoke on conditions of anonymity told Acholi Times that the Omona was a regular at the court vicinity making many to mistake him for being a court staff.
“I have seen him here on many occasions. He even mingles with some of the big lawyers here which made it hard to believe he is a masquerader,” the source said.
Gulu District Police Commander, Martin Okoyo said the police are holding the suspect at pending investigations.
He said police are also waiting for Justice Mutonyi who is not within the District so that her statement is recorded before the suspect is arraigned before the courts of law.
Mr Okoyo said the suspect will be charged with obtaining money by false pretense.
In his statement to the police, the suspect however denied being a masquerader and instead said he wanted to offer the money to Justice Mutonyi for appreciating her work.
In October 2014, Police arrested a man accused of trying to bribe a Grade One Magistrate at Gulu Magistrate’s Court with Shs 100,000.
