The old boys of St Joseph’s College Layibi in Gulu district have protested what they term as the ‘‘unfair’’ transfer of ‘’good’’ teachers from the school.
While speaking at the school yesterday during celebrations to mark Saint Joseph’s Day, Micheal Ochora, the Chairman of the old boys association said they(old boys) will protest unfair future transfer of good teachers from the school because it has a negative impact on performance.
Ochora pointed out the transfer of the school headteacher, Robert Ojok, who was in 2014 transferred to Alero senior secondary school and replaced with the headteacher of Moroto senior secondary school.
Ojok’s transfer was reversed after the old boys, among other stakeholders in the school, petitioned the ministry over the transfer. At the time of his transfer Ojok had served as headmaster of the school for less than two years.
“Why not also to send us teachers from Kisubi, Namagunga,Kibuli SS in the central than sending us teachers from very poor performing schools,’’ Ochora wondered.
St Mary’s College Kisubi, Namagunga, and Kibuli are some of the best performing traditional schools in the country.
The ministry of education makes yearly transfer of teachers and headteachers around the country arguing that it’s necessary to improve performance and effectiveness in schools around the country.
On his part headteacher Robert Ojok did not make comments on the alleged unfair transfer, but instead told the old boys that the school had installed security cameras (CCTV) to monitor students who jump over the wall to escape from the school.
Father Eric Umar who represented Arch Bishop John Baptist Odama as the main celebrant and chief guest at the celebration of St Joseph’s feast day urged the students, teachers and non-teaching staff to emulate the ways of Saint Joseph’s so that performance at the college improves.
