The Assistant Commissioner of Uganda prisons in charge of professional standards, Okullu Alfred Dakokati, has urged the community in northern Uganda to support the reintegration of inmates after they serve their sentences.
Dakokati was speaking today, Friday, at Afrigue Hotel in Gulu town during the launch of an economic empowerment and social re-integration for ex-prisoners in Lango and Acholi Sub region. The project will be implemented by Advance Africa, an NGO.
Ronald Rwankangi, Executive Director of Advance Africa said in many cases ex-inmates face rejection in their communities after their sentences.
Rwankangi said Uganda Prisons supports his organisation’s project because it provides rehabilitation for ex-inmates so they don’t become beggars and a menace to their families.
According to Rwankangi, the I million Euro project funded by the European Union and Caritas Switzerland will benefit 12,000 youthful former inmates by equipping them with social entrepreneurship skills in tailoring and art and craft.
