Gulu University students on Wednesday evening torched the main hall at the campus in a protest over the university’s delay in releasing exam results for the last semester.
The protest involved mainly students from the faculty of education and humanity.
The students were left with just a week to begin their end of semester exams.
The torched mail hall is a multipurpose building used for lectures as well as offices. The building houses the offices of the university spokesperson.
Police fired life bullets and teargas to disperse the protesting students.
The police fire brigade arrived too late to save the building whose roof was already consumed by a blaze.
Robert Mukembo, the Gulu University Guild president condemned the students for burning the building.
“I strongly condemn the act of burning the building. There were other ways the students should have taken to express their angers,” said the student leader.
Martin Okoyo the Gulu district police commander said police will open an inquiry into the burning of the building.
“We are opening an inquiry on the students. It is a criminal case to burn the university hall. We shall arrest them all one by one and charge them in Court,” he said.
At the time of filing this story, no injuries were reported during the scuffle between the police and the students.
Police is keeping guard at the university.
Both the the Gulu Vice chancellor and the University spokesperson were not available for comment.
