The ministry of Education, Sports, Science and Technology is on the spotlight over the sorry state of Pece War Memorial Stadium in Gulu district.
Gulu Chairman Ojara Martin Mapenduzi blames the terrible state of the stadium on the Ministry of education which he claims has been slow in carrying out renovation work.
Work on the stadium, according to Mapenduzi, should have begun last year, but up to now, he adds, no work has started at the crumbling stadium.
Dr Rose Nassali Lukwago, the Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education when contacted on Monday said without providing details that the ministry will renovate Pece Stadium. Dr Lukwago referred our reporter to the Commissioner of Sports in the ministry of education, Omara Apita.
Mr Opita said renovation of Pece Stadium is already in the ministry’s programme. He revealed that the ministry is waiting for the release of 20 billion shillings which has already been approved by parliament.
Gulu district sports officer, Aldo Otto told Acholi Times that 10 million had already been locally raised as contribution towards the renovation of the stadium. The money was raised from primary and secondary schools in Gulu.
Last year Gulu district local government passed a resolution to make all primary and secondary schools in the district to pay 500 /=and 1000/= respectively annually towards the renovation of Pece.
Aldo Otto appealed to the local community to contribute towards the development of the stadium.
Pece stadium formerly known as ‘Acholi war Memorial Stadium ‘was built in 1959 by the British to recognise the contribution of the Acholi who fought in the Second World War.
