The driver of a car in which former health minister Dr Henry Obonyo and three of his family members perished in a tragic accident in January this year is set to appear in court tomorrow in Gulu.
Denis Gakumba, 28, is set to reappear tomorrow before Gulu Grade I Magistrate, Paul Owino. Magistrate Owino had earlier May 19 as date for hearing of the case.
Gakumba, a resident of Kawempe in Kampala is facing nine counts; four for causing death through reckless driving and five counts of causing bodily injuries.
He was formally charged on 21 April. Court heard that on January 2, 2016, while driving a vehicle registration number UAU 249 K along Gulu-Kampala Highway, Gakumba caused the death of four people through reckless driving. The four were: Dr Obonyo, his wife Kevina Obonyo and two of their daughters; Majorine and Elizabeth Obonyo.
Gakumba denied all the charges and was granted a non- cash bail of 5 million shillings.
Tomorrow, the prosecution is expected produce witnesses to pin Gakumba.
The deadly accident in which Dr Obonyo and three of his close families members perished occurred at St Thomas More in Bobi Sub-county, about 32 kilometres south of Gulu Town.
Obonyo, as former minister of industry and later on health in the short-lived government of President Tito Okello Lutwa.
Two of their grandchildren– Annabel Lugon and Gabriela Lugon survived the road carnage.
Dr Obonyo and his family members were all resident in the United Kingdom and where travelling to their ancestral home in Madi-Opei in Lamwo District.
