The Bishop of northern Uganda diocese, Rt Rev Johnson Gakumba has condemned the attack on Gulu Central Police Station describing it as brutal. The Bishop was addressing mourners on Tuesday during a requiem mass for Moses Masaba at Christ the King Church in Gulu.
The late Masaba sustained serious injuries during the shootout that ensured when the police station was attacked. He succumbed to his injuries at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor on Monday evening. He had been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Masaba who was born in May 1985. He joined the police in 2010 will be laid to rest on Wednesday at his ancestral home in Mbale district in eastern Uganda. Reports say he had just lost a child two weeks before his death.
Bishop Gakumba said that there are better ways of resolving grievance instead of launching violent assault on police officers who were doing their noble duty of protecting citizens.
The Anglican Bishop said the attackers should have chosen dialogue over violence.
Wilson Kwanya, the Aswa River Region Police Commander (RPC) criticized a section of the public and politicians who are describing the Sunday attack on the police as stage-managed.
Addressing the mourners, Kwanya said a clear minded person cannot stage an attack which can lead to a loss of life one of their own.
He challenged those who think the attack was stage- managed to wait and hear evidence that will be presented before court. The police boss revealed that the driver who drove the vehicle which is suspected to have been used to ferry the attacker to Opit and later Gulu Central Police station has already made a confession.
Samuel Odonga-Otto, the controversial Aruu South legislator challenged the security forces on the attack and demanded for a full investigation into the surge in violence in the Acholi sub region.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the Sunday night attack
