Private Michael Opoka, a UPDF soldier who was shot and injured in the Sunday night attack at Gulu police has spoken to journalists from his hospital bed at St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu district.
Private Opoka was rushed to Lacor hospital an hour after being shot.
Private Opoka said his condition was improving and that he was already looking forward to getting back to work as soon as he is discharged.
Opoka said he was shot at when the Gulu District Police Commander (DPC) was briefing them (soldiers ) at the Gulu Central Police. It is unclear at what point the soldiers got to Gulu police; whether they arrived during the attack or before.
“They DPC was telling us (soldiers) to work with the police when we heard gunshots. I tried to take cover but I was shot in the arm,’’ said Opiyo. “I took cover in the barracks and started shooting [at the attackers]’’ added Opoka.
“I thank God because my condition is improving every day from the first day when I was admitted here at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor.’’
The 4th Division army spokesman Lt Hassan Kato aid Private Opoka was one of the soldiers who fought to repel the attackers.
10 suspects arrested
The 4th Division spokesman said so far 10 of the suspects in the attack on the Central Police have been arrested.
“We are still hunting for more. In this operation we shall leave no stone unturned until they have all been arrested,” said Lt Kato.
He called on the public to cooperate with security in identifying the suspects in the attack.
