Ambassador Olara Otunnu, the outgoing Uganda Peoples Party (UPC) president has filed a petition before the Gulu high court in a bid to ensure the rights of Dan Oola Odiya are respected.

The petition was filed  through Peter Walubiri of Kwesigabe Bamwine and Walubiri& Co advocates seeking to enforce Odiya`s rights as provided for under article 50 subs section 1 and 2 of the 1995 constitution.

Oola Odiya was yesterday charged with seven counts including murder and treason and remanded to Gulu Central Prison. He was arrested nearly two weeks ago in connection with attacks last month on Opit army detach in Gulu district.

Odiya is a UPC mobiliser and spokesperson for the party in the Acholi sub region.

Odiya was yesterday charged before the Gulu magistrate’s court with his co- accused Kenneth Otto and Sam Oboma.

Otunnu accuses the police and army spokesperson for trying and sentencing odiya before the media for his alleged involvement in the Opit army detach attack.

Otunnu said: ‘‘what we have seen is the comprehensive violation of the rights of Dan Oola Odiya,’’ Otunnu said at a press conference in Gulu.

Otunnu observed that although the state has the liberty to arrest and bring charges against any person but it should be done in accordance with the law.
