Uganda National Road Authority-UNRA has Okayed payment for families whose land has been affected by the ongoing Olwiyo-Gulu road construction.

The payment is to be made by Zhongmei limited, the company contracted by UNRA to construct the road.

A total of 5 billion shillings has been earmarked for the compensation of over 1,000 persons affected by the construction of the Gulu- Olwiyo road which began in 2015.

Nwoya district chairman Patrick Kelli Oryema said the list for the affected persons has been approved adding that payment will be made in their account soon. He did not say when the payment would begin.

Oryema however said compensation for families who are having conflicts over land has been pushed to the next badge of payment to be made.

“Those conflicting within the family kindly agree on one person to represent you so that the money for the compensation is paid in that persons account. Without this [agreeing on one person] there shall be no compensation, “Oryema said.

Locals in Koch Goma Sub County, Nwoya district, in May 2016 threatened to close the road over delay in payment of compensation for those whose land was party taken over as road reserve. The compensation should have made in 2012.
