Three people died and 54 others were injured in accident today as the UPDF evacuated mostly Ugandan nationals from war torn South Sudan.
The accident, according to the 4th Division Spokesman, Lt Hassan Kato happened at a place called Jabuleni in Eastern Equatorial.
‘‘A civilian lorry failed to negotiate a corner and went off the road killing three and injuring 54,’’ Lt Kato told Acholi Times on phone from Bibia army barracks near the Uganda- South Sudan border.
The lorry was carrying about 100 people, according to the UPDF spokesman.
The injured were brought for treatment at various health facilities in Gulu.
The UPDF has been evacuating Ugandans from South Sudan since last week. So far, Lt Kato said, about 6,000 Ugandans have been evacuated. Some of the evacuated also includes citizens from East African countries including South Sudanese, Kato said.
Tuesday’s evacuation, according to the army spokesman was the last until the UPDF gets orders to make another trip into South Sudan.
‘‘This is the last trip as per the order were given. We shall wait for the next order or another arrangement to move in and get other Ugandans.’’
