Preliminary police investigation points to suicide as the cause of death of Kizito Aliti, a 5th year Gulu University medical student who was found dead at a hostel near the University’s main campus on Sunday morning.

A postmortem conducted by a police surgeon on Monday indicates that Aliti died as a result of multiple organ failure.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Aswa Region says medical report shows that there are signs that the deceased died as a result of poisoning.

Okema told the press on Monday afternoon that the liver, lung, brain and the eyes of the deceased had signs that he have killed himself by ingesting a chemical.

The police spokesman said further tests will be done on the deceased’s internal organs in order to establish the kind of chemical which killed him.

According to police, Aliti had had an affair with unidentified girl, also a Gulu University student which had recently ended bitterly.

Police suspects his troubled relationship could be the reason why he chose to end his life.

Aliti served as Deputy Minister for Transport, Information & Communication, and Medical students’ representative.

He passed on while in his final stages of completing a 5 years medical course in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery of Gulu University.

His body was transported to Arua on Monday. He will be buried at their ancestral home in Maracha Yivu off Nyadri Town on Tuesday.
