Prossy Alanyo Owiny
Alanyo worked as a clinical officer at Lalogi Health Center IV, in Lalogi Sub County also in Omoro district before resigning her position to contest for the FDC primaries she won with 30 votes. Alanyo has promised to tackle the high rate of Hepatitis B, poverty and food insecurity. Alonyo hopes to take advantage of the FDC’s dominance in Acholi to win the seat. She holds a diploma in clinical medicine and public health. Both her and her husband come from Omoro.
Christine Atimango Odongo
Is a former Amuru acting Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). She has unsuccessfully run thrice as an aspirant. Atimango first challenged Norbert Mao, the DP President for the Gulu Municipality MP seat in 2006. She never came close to winning the election as Mao won by massive margin. In 2011, she was the DP flagbearer for Gulu District Woman MP. However she lost to Betty Aol Ocan, the FDC candidate. Atimango later announced that she had quit DP and joined the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. She, however, again, quit the NRM and is now running as an Independent candidate for the Omoro woman MP seat. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Makerere University. She promised better service delivery for women of Omoro.
Santa Okot
A teacher by profession, she was appointed by the elusive LRA rebel leader, Joseph Kony to be part of his negotiation team at the Juba peace talks which helped bring peace to northern Uganda. She attended Christ the King Teachers Training College in Gulu district later she joined Shimoni Teachers Training College. She also attained a Diploma in Education from Ngetta National Teachers College after which she enrolled at Uganda Matyrs University, Nkozi Bachelor’s Degree in Democracy and Development Studies from 2003-2005. Okot was the first Woman MP for Pader district when it was curved out of Kitgum by Parliament in 2001. She lost twice to Christine Dorine Lowila (NRM) in her bid to retain the Pader seat. Okot is running as an Independent. She is using her experience in politics as her strong point in her bid to be the first Omoro MP, just like she was the first woman MP for Pader. She is a widow after losing her husband the Late William Okot in 1992. A teacher by profession, she was once appointed by the elusive LRA rebel leader, Joseph Kony in his Juba Peace Talks team. Okot has now opted to run in Omoro District as Woman MP where she claimed has been born on an Independent ticket. Okot says she is the most experienced politicians who will make Omoro one of the best new districts.
Catherine Lamwaka
Lamwaka served as first female Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Pader close to four years. She was later reappointed to serve in Gulu in the same capacity. She last year resigned to contest under the NRM party ticket for the Gulu Woman MP seat. She lost to Betty Aol Ocan, (FDC) in the hotly contested February 18 election. Lamwaka says she want to see Omoro become a model district for Uganda. She holds a degree in public administration from Gulu University. Lamwaka is married (to Thomas Opira) with two children. Although family is a staunch UPC supporter, she chose to subscribe to NRM.
Grace Pamella Lanyero
Lanyero is a social worker. She has worked with different local and international organisations in northern Uganda, including at the peak of the conflict between the Uganda government and the LRA. She is running on the DP ticket and is backed by the party President Norbert Mao. Lanyero believes she is the best among the contestants to represent the women of Omoro. She promises to tackle poverty, improve education in Omoro and boost agriculture. It is her first time to dive into the murky waters of politics.
Other candidates in the race include; Mariea Shaka Lapolo (UPC), Alice Aneno Oroma, Alice Akello Latigo, Rose Nyapolo and Betty Lalam, all Independent candidates.
Campaigns kicked off on August 1, and election is scheduled for August 29, according to Denis Obong, the District Returning Officer for the Electoral Commission for Omoro.
