The Gulu magistrate’s court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced Local Council 3 Chairman of Bar- Dege division in Gulu Municipality.
Deogratius Ssejemba, the Gulu Chief Magistrate ordered Lumumba to pay 450,000 shillings or spend a year in jail.
Patrick Oola Lumumba appeared before the Gulu Chief Magistrate’s court on Wednesday alongside his accomplices, Geoffrey Kabi who was also charged with conspiracy to murder contrary to section 208 of the penal code act.
Prosecution led by William Bayo told court that in February 2015, Lumumba and Kabir planned to procure a gun from the black market in South Sudan and use it to kill Lovis Odokonyero Oryema.
In a two minute voice recording played in court as part of evidence against the duo, Kabir is purported to have said he will go to South Sudan and buy a pistol if Lumumba agrees to give him 10 Million shillings so that he can “finish off Odokonyero.’’
Both Lumumba and Kabi denied the accusations against them.
They accused Odokonyero of instead trying to escape justice by attempting to kill an aggravated defilement case against, him (Odokonyero).
In a separate case, Lumumba dragged Odokonyero to court for allegedly defiling his daughter, a pupil in a school where Odokonyero is the Director.
On the other hand, Lumumba’s co-accused, Kabir says he is aggrieved after Odokonyero allegedly forced his wife identified only as Lagum to abort after they two became bird lovers.
Kabir also accused Odokonyero infecting his wife with HIV/Aids.
Magistrate Ssejemba ruled that he was convinced by the prosecution witnesses.
Ssejemba accordingly fined the duo and ordered them each to pay Odokonyero 450,000 shillings each totaling to 900,000 shillings. Failure to pay will see them sent to jail for 12 months.
Conspiracy to murder carries a maximum sentence of 14 years on conviction.
