Al Hajji Musa Khalil, the Acholi Chief Khadi has warned the residents of Attiak Sub County in Amuru district that those are engaged in bitter land conflict with their neighbours may not go to heaven.
Addressing ”Land conflict mitigators” at Attiak Sub County headquarters last week, Hajji Khalil revealed that prophet Mohammad in his vision, saw a man who was carrying a piece of land on his head, with his knees wobbling. According to Khalil, this prompted Mohammad to ask Angel Gabriel why the man looked tired and had a piece of land on his head.
In his response, Angel Gabriel told the Prophet that the man in his vision has been involved in land wrangle.
The Acholi Khadi accordingly warned that because of heavy loads, one can fail to go heaven to receive judgment since they will not be able to make it to Allah during judgment time.
The Khadi said decried the rampant conflicts over land saying some land owners can’t open even small portions of their land but instead are involved in fights over land boundaries instead of investing their energy in farming.
Since 2008, the Acholi Religious Leaders’ Peace Initiative (ARLPI), an interfaith organisation has warned that land conflict will become another war in itself after the end of conflict between the Uganda government and the rebels of the Lords Resistance Army (LRA).
The Program Officer, Land, Justice & Governance at ALRPI, James Odongkara attributed the increases cases of land conflict insincerity among the elders.
Odongkara explained that the elders are not telling the truth during land mediation because of the threat and fear that they will be denied food. Odonkara noted that this forces elders to lie in order to gain favours.
Through alternative dispute resolution other than court, ARLPI has resolved over 500 cases of land conflict through mediation. At least six cases of land related conflict are registered by the Sub County court committee of Atiak Sub County each week.
