The Uganda People`s Defence Force (UPDF) on Sunday recruited 52 from Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya and Omoro districts into the army, said Col Jeff Kupe Mukasa, the recruitment team leader.
The exercise is being done nationally. Recruitment for Gulu and the surrounding districts took place at Pece stadium in Gulu town.
Col Mukasa said 22 of the recruited are from Gulu, 13 from Amuru, 9 from Omoro and 8 from Nwoya district.
The new recruits will join the army’s infantry unit, according to Col Mukasa.
No female was recruited in Gulu said Col Mukasa. But Mukasa said some ladies had been recruited at the exercise in Kololo in Kampala where professionals including medical doctors, lawyers, engineers and technology experts were chosen.
For the Gulu recruitment, Col Mukasa said the army was looking for holders of Uganda Certificates of Examination (UCE) attained between 2014 and 2015. The applicants had to be physically fit and without health complications like Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, Hypertension and skin diseases.
Applicants who came with fake academic papers were turned away. As is usually the case, more people turned up for recruitment than the number required by the army.
