Residents of Coo- Pe in Bungatira Sub County, Gulu district are living in fear after unknown gunmen raided the village twice in a space of less than a month, a local leader from the area has said.
The latest security incident in the village happened on Saturday when two men, one armed with an assault rifle fired into the air before disappearing into the dark.
The incident happened at around 10 pm at Coo- Pe trading center when revelers were enjoying the evening.
No one was, however, injured in the shootings.
On September 7, a 21 year old businessman was shot and killed by unknown gunman in Cet Kana trading center, just 400 meters away from Coo-Pe trading center.
The deceased was been identified as Robert Okello.
Police say Okello was shot in the chest while at a drinking joint at around 10:00pm by the yet –to- be unidentified gunman.
Another person only identified as Lanyero who was shot in the leg during the same incident was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral hospital for treatment.
Amos Ojogi Lakidi, the area Councilor V says following the two gun related incidents, resident of Coo- Pe are leaving in fear.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Public Relations (PRO), when contacted said they have not yet received any report on the latest gun attack in Coo-Pe.
On the death of Okello, the police spokesman said he had not yet got information from the investigating team.
Kitgum and to an extent Gulu has of recent witnessed a rise in a wave of violence. But most of the gun related violence has been recorded in Kitgum prompting the Inspector General of Police to travel to the district.
The wave of gun related violence is partly blamed on illegal weapons trafficked into Uganda through porous borderlines from troubled South Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR).
