Suspects arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of John Oola Omona, the former Gulu Deputy Town Clerk were paid 2 million shilling to commit the murder, Gulu Resident District Commissioner, Capt Okot Santos Lapolo has said.
Capt Lapolo, who also doubles as Chairman District Security Committee revealed that the latest suspects in connection with the grisly killing have confessed to carrying out the murder and sharing the two million shilling.
Lapolo revealed four men were picked from Limo, a slum in Gulu town had confessed to carrying out the murder.
The RDC who was on Tuesday speaking in an interview with this reporter said with the information obtained from the suspect, police are inching closer what he described as ‘‘the truth of the matter’’.
He declined to provide more details on the arrested suspects and who had paid them to murder the late Oola.
Oola was attacked and killed by suspected iron bar hit men in Kanyagoga ‘A’ in Bar- Dege division in Gulu Municipality on May 22. He was hit shortly after he dropped a female friend, Alice Kipwola. She was arrested as a suspect but released on police bond. So far a total of 16 suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder.
Oola was murdered only about 200 meters from Gulu Central Government Prisons, a guarded government facility.
His killing prompted Gen Kale Kayihura, the Police Chief to leave the comfort of his office in Kampala and camp in Gulu for two days before he left.
When contacted, Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the arrests and said five men were picked from various parts of Gulu town and in the process, deadly weapons such as knife were recovered.
The police spokesman said he was unaware of the confession from one of the arrested suspects.
