A court in Gulu has sentenced to life in prison a 26 year-old man for raping and murdering an 80-year old woman in September  2017.

Gulu High Court Resident Judge Justice Stephen Mubiru on Wednesday last week found Simon Lubangakene a resident of Keyi “A“ village in Kabedopong sub ward in Kasubi Parish, Gulu municipality guilty of raping and murdering Rosa Atoo.

Prosecution told court that Lubangakene on the fateful night of 30th September 2017 raped Atoo from his house and later murdered her.

The judge asked the convict to appeal within 14 days if he is unsatisfied with the judgement.

Patrick Yoorach, the Bardege division Speaker welcome the ruling saying it is a deterrent to rowdy youths who take advantage of vulnerable old people.

Lubangakene was arrested by locals after the rape and murder and handed over to police.
