A driver of a fuel tanker identified, and his pump attendant are feared dead after their lorry plunged into the river Nile at Karuma Bridge, along the Gulu- Kampala Highway.
The driver, Alex Ogwal, 35 and his pump attendant Howard Obaro were employees of Shine Energy Petrol Station in Lira City.
The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle registration Number UAS 337M on Saturday morning at around 11:30AM after the brakes failed at a check point before plunging into the fast-flowing river, 7.5 metres deep.
According to police, the pair was transporting fuel to Masindi Port in Kiryandongo District when they met their death. The accident disrupted traffic flow along the Gulu-Kampala Highway.
In June 2018, a Fuso truck registration number UAS 994 Y lost control, hit the guardrail of the bridge and fell in the waterfalls.
In a similar incident in July 2017, three people including a driver, his turn man and a passenger died after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into the Nile River at the same point.
