Mao waves to voters at the rally at Cerelene in Gulu town. He told voters not to vote for Museveni to cause a re-run.

Democratic Party President Norbert Mao on Wednesday told voters in Acholi not to vote for president Museveni in the 2016 general elections to cause a re-run.

For one to be declared president, the constitution requires a 50% of the vote plus one valid vote.

In a rally at Cereleno market in Pece division, Gulu town, Mao told voters that the opposition has a common agenda of removing Museveni from power.

‘‘Don`t give your votes to Museveni so that the ball remains in the field because if you don`t vote for him the 50% average will not be attained, there will be a re-election between Kizza and Museveni. I will carry a big key (FDC symbol) and rally support for Besigye that you might think am FDC,’’ Mao said.

He told the rally to vote for any presidential candidate except Museveni.

‘‘All your votes should go to any opposition candidate. It is important to us because we all have a common goal of bringing down president Museveni from power.’’

Mao said for now he supports Amama Mbabazi for president but said that he will contest for president in 2021.

Mao blamed the Democratic Alliance (TDA) for failing to field a single candidate for the presidential elections saying the TDA should have remained united like the Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative (ARLPI).

ARLPI is a body of religious leaders that has been key in lobbying for peace in northern Uganda.
