Police in Gulu yesterday said they have arrested two women with a sack of marijuana.

Police spokesman Jimmy Patrick Okema said the women were arrested in Layibi Central, an outskirt of Gulu town– located along the Gulu- Kampala highway.

“We arrested two women with a sack of opium in Layibi Central sub ward,’’ Okema told journalists.

Medics at Gulu Referral Hospital, the only one with a psychiatric unit the region attributes the rising cases of mental health disorders to increased substance abuse and alcoholism.

Police say the two women identified as Aciro Racheal Rukia and Susan Akwo are detained at Gulu Central police awaiting being arraigned before court.

Although thought to be widely consumed among a certain section and age group in Uganda, consumption of marijuana is  outlawed in Uganda.
