Allan Okello, the northern Regional Prisons Commander (RPC) has urged newly promoted junior prisons officers to prepare adequately for their retirement.
Addressing 152 officers who were recently promoted, Okello said no one can dodge retirement and that officers must think of a better life service.
Okello was speaking on Wednesday at Lugore government prisons farm in Gulu district.
He expressed concern over the state of retired prisons officers who he said become frail within four months after leaving their jobs.
The prison’s boss said that when he first joined the prisons service years back, he and other officers were advised to prepare to retire but with his own retirement knocking on the door, he is beginning to see sense in the advice.
He challenged those still in active service to self-develop and advised them to engage in income generating activities like farming to cushion their life after retiring from service.
The Deputy 4th Division Commander, Col Fred Akiiki Rugadya, who was also present during the function said the army too is facing a similar problem when it comes to retirement.
Col Rugadya said that some officers are even reluctant to retire when they clock retirement age.
Col Rugadya attributed it to lack of preparedness among the officers hence making it difficult for them to live a better life outside the institution which employed them.

Margret Obonyo Orik, the Gulu District Prisons Commander urged the newly promoted officers to work hard and maintain high level of discipline if they are to serve diligently.
