Police in Gulu on Tuesday night recovered two guns from two suspected thugs in Gulu municipality and Paicho Sub County.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa region police spokesperson said that the first gun registration number UG/POL N511045106976 was recovered from Aywee village in Layibi division with 9 rounds of ammunition, with one bullet in the chamber ready for firing.

The gun was recovered from a suspected robber by a police patrol car in Aywee in Layibi division.

The suspected robber whose identity was not revealed by police escaped from Gulu Central Police station as he was being led to the cells.

Three police officers including the officer in charge of the counter, the station guard and the officer in charge of cell where arrested and detained over negligence of duty which led to the escape of a suspect.

The gun, found in the possession of the suspected robber, according to Okema, was stolen in February this year from a private security in Kitgum district.

The security guard, Aaron Rubangakene Aaron, was guarding Mewa Ducu depot in Kitgum town when the gun was stolen from him reportedly because he was asleep while on duty.

Rubangakane is serving 8 months in Kitgum Central Prison.

The second gun was recovered by police on Tuesday night in Paicho Sub County in Gulu district when a thug attempted to use it to rob the community in Paicho.  The thug was however over powered by the community and in the process the handle of the gun broke. He ran away abandoning the gun.

Police said they will continue with night patrols to check on criminal activities in Gulu district.
