NRM registers 50,000 members amidst shortage of cards

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Gulu has registered over 50,000 members in the ongoing fresh registration of members which was launched by President Yoweri Museveni at the 4th division Army headquarters Gulu.

The exercise which is being spear headed by the new secretariat is intended to replace the so called list formulated by Amama Mbabazi, the former secretary general and also prime minister.

NRM Administrative Secretary Gulu, Mr. Komakech Simon said his office has been overwhelmed with various phone calls from the sub counties asking for more NRM cards after the ones they were given got finished.

The administrative secretary says that those who haven’t registered should not be worried as the headquarters is aware about the ongoing situation and will reconsider providing more cards.

He says that, “The numbers are overwhelming and this shows that this time round the NRM party is going to sweep votes in the region unlike previous elections.”

He says that over 50,000 members’ cards have already been distributed and majority of the members have been registered unlike other political parties which don’t have the exact figures of their members.

Mr. Komakech says, “The exercise is timely as this will replace a list of names of members which has been mismanaged by the outgoing executive as the old list went missing mysteriously.”

The NRM registration was slated to end last week in the evening and the NRM party Gulu has superseded the required numbers of 45,000 members, if what they say is true.

Recently, in a press conference held at Acholi inn the deputy secretary general NRM, Mr. Richard Todowng said that they want to register over 20 million members.

But political analysts say the figures are not realistic putting in mind that the eligible voters are less than 8 million according to the just ended 2006 general elections and the recent population census which puts Uganda at 35 million people with the majority being young people who are not eligible to vote.
