Police in Nwoya district on Monday rounded up over 30 people in a crackdown on gambling and early boozing.

In 2014, Nwoya passed a food ordinance although there has been a delay in implementing it.  According to the ordinance, bars are supposed to be opened between 4pm to 10 pm.

Emily Afoyocan, the Nwoya police Community liaisons officer said the 30 will be charged with being vagabonds.

“We have just started this operation and we are going to intensify more so in the night. If we get anybody drinking beyond 10 pm we shall just arrest,” Emily Afoyocan told Acholi Times.

Afoyocan explained that there are many theft cases being reported mostly in the trading centers in Nwoya, something she blamed on long hours people take in drinking alcohol.

Joseph Okot and Ayiko Rose both arrested from a bar claimed they were not part of those drinking at the time of the arrest.

Nwoya district chairman, Patrick Okello Oryema recently announced that the district would launch an operation against those who start drinking early during working hours.

Oryema said alcohol remains a big challenge to development in the district as people spend hours in which they should be productive drinking alcohol.
