A woman was yesterday knocked dead by a tractor at Amatheon Agri Farm in Got Okwara village in Nwoya district.
Amatheon Agri is German involved in modern commercial agriculture in Alero and Purongo Sub County in Nwoya district. The farm was opened in 2013, growing mostly maize, soya beans and beans for export.
The incident at the farm happened at around 9 am yesterday when the tractor driven by a driver who has only been identified as David knocked Akello, a mother of five. Akello died shortly afterwards.
The driver was reportedly chasing away villagers who were collecting grain seeds that had fallen from the tractor, something that is said to be against the farm’s rules. In the process of chasing the villagers, Akello was knocked by the tractor.
According LCIII chairman, of Lungulu sub county Denis Atube the tractor ran over Akello who had hidden in the bush.
Nancy Akumu, the Corporate Social Responsibility Officer for Amatheon declined to comment when contacted.
Nwoya DPC Moses Okello confirmed the incident and said three people have been arrested in connection with setting the tractor a blaze after the incident.
Okello said the police has been deployed in at the farm and called on the family of the deceased to be calm.
Anena Aweko, an Aunt to the deceased blamed the incident on hunger which she said has ravaged Purongo, forcing her niece to travel 20kms to Got Okwara in search for food only to meet her death.
“Elephants destroyed all her food crops from the garden in Latoro parish and she had nothing to feed her children,” Aweko told Acholi Times.
In 2014, a guard attached to Oola Lolim farm in Purongo Sub County short dead a woman at the farm who was reportedly stealing maize.

Europeans had been our problems and will continue to be, but let us be clear, we will resist till they understand that we are Luo and we will remain Luo. Totally independent and that is the biggest footstep that our fore fathers had set and we all are going to follow be it death, disaster, war, colonization etc we shall always be Luo.
Hi Readers, I have been reading Acholi Times for about two
years now but haven’t come across unacquainted report of the sort. I don’t
speak for the company but I feel that the public be given accurate information.
It’s true that an incident that led to death of the said woman occurred on the
said date, but a lot of data isn’t correct here. I advise that the writer
practices proper investigative journalism to develop this media platform going
forward. Please see below FYI
1. “Amatheon Agri is a German…” Amatheon Agri is not an individual. Please look up Amatheon
Agri from the internet. It’s a German Agribusiness company. I don’t think this
is a typo but a signal of imperfect research.
2. “growing… for export” Amatheon doesn’t only produce for export.
3. “tractor driven by…David” There is no driver at Amatheon named David.
4. “the driver was reportedly chasing away villagers…Akello was knocked down by the tractor” This
is entirely wrong information. The matter is still being investigated by Uganda
Police but if you are keen, kindly visit Nwoya Central Police station for
proper information based on statements of witnesses IF the police may allow you
to access.
5. “Nwoya DPC, Moses Okello” The DPC of Nwoya isn’t named “Moses”
I don’t mean to be insolent but I feel it’s not proper for half-baked,
lowly researched material to be relayed in the media.
In Kenya at independence they had Bruce MacKenzie, Lord Delamere etc, white farmers owning very very exceptionally large tracts of the few fertile arable land in kenya. It is said Lord Delamere had close to one million acres. Bruce MacKenzie had similar ownership. Uganda was spared by the British colonizers from this form of foreign land grab including inter-tribal land grab. With Museveni, we now have Arabs, Chinese, Europe and and Indians angling to grab ancestral lands. Worse in some cases they grow the crop on African soil to feed their people back home. An acre rents for CAD$70 per year (with one growing season) in the prairies (Alberta especially). Mind you this is not outright purchase. This is only a lesson for those arguing for land for sugar cane. Please chrge at a minimum $70 / per acre / per year rent. If you want to truly negotiate partnership with Madhvani, you need to look at the proforma income statement from their Amuru sugar project. The project will last 20 plus years and will have upfront expenditure before incomes start to flow. We need to understand Project Finance Principles, Joint Venture Concepts, Carried Interest (land owner will be carried interests), Discounted Cash Flow. Internal rate of Return, etc. The Proforma Balance Sheet will betray the value Madhvani attaches to the land (land does not depreciate). A smart analysis would look at the expected Return on Investment (ROI). Return on EQUITY, IRR etc. Through the back door we can determine [1] how much Madhvani will borrow (mortgage our land to support his loan); how much he will put from his pocket etc. Remember th Balnce Sheet must Balance therefore the shortfall is a plug that should equal the value he places on the land and hence the share of the Amuru land owners. I am sorry it is more complex than the above BUT please do not just accept so called SHARES without proper analysis.
