Alfred Okwera Olango the Ugandan refugee who was last week shot dead in the United States of America is from Nwoya district, in northern Uganda.

Olango, 38, was shot and killed by police in San Diego, a suburb of El Cajon, California on Tuesday last week.

It has since emerged that Olango is from Te- Okutu village, Agonga Parish Koch Goma Sub County in Nwoya district.

Nwoya is one of the eight districts which make up Acholi sub region.

Like other districts in Acholi, Nwoya also suffered from two decades of violence pitting the Ugandan government and Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

Te-Okutu village lies about 40kms West of Gulu town just  about 70kms from Murchison Falls National Park.

At the late Olango’s home, where a brick house was hastily being put up, his  relatives including declined to be interviewed or photographed by journalists they are mourning the death of their own.

The late Olango is 3rd of nine children. He was born to Richard Olango Abuka and Pamella Benge.

Olango moved to the US around 1991 where his other family members were already living.

According to Facebook posts, Olango is survived by two children, both girls.

He worked as a Head Cook at West Coast Hooters in California.

Police in California say they shot dead a Ugandan refugee when he pulled an object that turned out to be an e-cigarette from his pocket and pointed it at a police officer.

Another video posted on the internet which showed the aftermath of the shooting appeared to corroborate the police’s account that they had ordered the man to remove his hand from his pocket.

The department says the officers were confronted by a man who refused to comply with instructions to remove a hand from his pocket, paced back and forth, then rapidly drew an object from the pocket, placed both hands together and extended them in a “shooting stance”.

El Cajon is a suburb of San Diego with a population of around 100,000 people, including a sizeable number of refugees.

In a brief statement, the US mission in Uganda posted on social media: “We are aware of reports that on September 29, Alfred Olango was shot and killed during an incident with law enforcement officers in El Cajon, California. We extend our deepest condolences to Mr Olango’s family and friends.”
