Gunfire rocked Anaka town council last night as police battled thugs who allegedly planned to steal from shops in Anaka market.
Two suspected thugs were shot and six others arrested by the police. The injured were identified as Julius Okeny and Brian Otim. They are hospitalized at Anaka Hospital.
The arrested are: Geoffrey Onen, Morris Opiyo, Richard Ocan, Douglas Okello, Daniel Onencan and Oscar Ojok.
Nwoya District Police Commander Dan Okello said the police had earlier in the day received a tip off about the move by the thugs to raid Anaka market and deployed at the market.
“We had to deploy our forces earlier on in the day upon receiving the information from security agents in the town council,’’ Dan Okello said.
Most of the suspects arrested are below 20 years of age. The suspects are from Gulu and Nwoya districts.
The DPC asked parents to have time with their children to discourage them against involving themselves illegal activities.
He said the suspects were found with iron bars, pangas, handsaws and hammers that they were using to break into shops.
Nwoya Beatrice Akello Akori, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nwoya warned anyone with intent to steal in preparation for the Independent Celebrations on October 9 will be dealt with.
“We know it’s a common practice for thugs during this period that they should get free things through stealing but we have set the security team to handle such wrong elements,’’ Akello said.
She said the suspects will be charged with aggravated robbery, burglary and theft.

Nwoya DPC Dan okello,so long as you want to be courageous for protection of People and their Property in Nwoya District,I think there is a lot to done for the under 20 years old “thugs”.May I contribute my support and complain as follows:
1.Government Policy to towards Social and Economic Welfare of the Youth is not available(Where is the Youth Wealth Creation Fund in Nwoya?)
2.Lack of investment in Business Investment
3.Training for Work and Construction inovations.
I believe while you take them to be charged DONT neglect to Rehabilitate and compromise with them.
