Anaka Hospital in Nwoya district has lost millions of shillings worth of property after a fire broke out at the hospital on Monday this week destroying 20 solar panels, sewage pipes, water pipes and a tank.

The fire broke out at around 2 pm on Monday afternoon.

Police is investigating the cause of the fire which is suspected to have been caused by an explosion from a solar panel.

“It’s really a big lost to Nwoya as a district with low revenue base because we shall now have to look round squeeze the money for the renovation of the part of the hospital[destroyed],’’ said Stella Amuge Oryang, the matron of Anaka Hospital.

Amuge dismissed speculation that the fire at the hospital was a case of arson.

Nwoya Chairman Patrick Okello Oryema put the estimated cost of  hospital property destroyed by the fire at 50 million shilling

Nwoya District has “no money” yet you sit on Uganda’s biggest revenue earners the Game Park and Oil. Demand you fair share. Anaka hospital should equal Mulago in terms of facilities in order to cater to tourists in need and the potential victims of petroleum development (oil spills to water table and the nile, Fire due to explosion of downhole fire in the wells, chemical spill, gas/chemical venting of reservoirs which as you know is chasing away elephants, Reservoir fracking practices, burst pipeline, occupation health and safety hazards to oil workers). Declare a moratorium on further petroleum activities until appropriate infrastructures are in place. These are of mutual benefit to the government tourism, the oil sector and the host communities OR ELSE Ogoni land of Niger Delta (remember they had Biafra, we had Kony). We need emergency response teams for fire and evacuations. The Anaka hospital should have the latest emergency facility with mobile life support to allow access to remote emergency locations. Compulsory Occupational Health and Safety and First Aid (cheap) training and certifications of teachers who can give their students the basics who in turn would disseminate to their communities. This is a must in order to coexist with oil. Remember in Acholi we burn and hunt in the dry season, it is our culture. Stopping it is like telling a Munyankole-Hima not to drink his cows’ or a Somali his camels’ milk in adulthood because it is child-food or they could be lactic intolerant. A progressive and democratic administration would have had in place what you have indicated. However for obevious reason you are aware of they will not do it. they would rather disenfranchised the Acholi people and achieve chwezi dominance in the area.
