National Water & Sewerage Corporation has suspended pumping water to 140,000 customers in Gulu town and its suburbs after Oyitino dam, as the main source of water, completely dried up.
To supply Gulu with adequate water, the National Water & Sewerage Corporation (NW& SC) needs to pump over 480,000 cubic litres per day for residents.
This is the second time in two years consecutively that Oyitino dam is drying up due to prolonged drought.
In a letter dated April 22, 2017, National Water & Sewerage Corporation Gulu area officials announced that they have stopped pumping water with effect of Friday, April 21, 2017 since there was no water in Oyitino.
Normal water supply will only be restored if the rain resumes, according to NW& SC officials. On Sunday it heavily rained in Gulu, raising hopes among Gulu town residents
The corporation has also put announcements over local FM radio station in Gulu town to inform its customers.
In an attempt to address the severe water problem, National Water installed two pumps in Onang and Mican. But the two pumps can only supply 600,000 litres a day instead of the 5 million litres demanded by the growing Gulu’s population.

The Gulu LCV Chairperson, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi described the situation as worrying.

Why can´t they dril water from under the ground.There is water some kilometers down under and there knowledge how to drill it.Why wait till there is drought and people die when there is water
