The late Oola John. He was murdered by unknown people  today morning at around midnight

Gulu Deputy Town Clerk John Oola has been murdered by suspected thugs, police in Gulu has said in a statement released Tuesday morning on the social media platform Whatsapp.

The statement by the Aswa region police spokesman said the late John Oola was hit by  unknown people at around midnight near Bright Valley Primary school located in Bardege Division, a Gulu town suburb.

The late Oola, said to be in his 40’s, was driving a Mitsubishi car with South Sudan registration numbers CE020K,  the police statement added. Oola was reportedly forcefully removed from the car and hit. It is not clear whether he died immediately or later from his injuries. His body  was picked by the police and taken to the Gulu Referral Hospital.

The car the late Oola was driving. Police say he was forced out by the attackers and hit

Alice Kipwola, the woman he had dropped in the night is in police custody to ”help with investigations,” police said.

A case Ref 04/23/05/2017 has been recorded at the Gulu Central Police.

Gulu has of recent witnessed a rise in crime in which thugs commonly known as ”iron- bar hit men” strike inspecting residents either late in the night or very early in the morning. Oola is the second senior government official to be hit. Recently a state attorney was hit on the head by  the iron- bar hitmen as he returned from prayers at around midnight but survived his injuries.

The car had South Sudan registration. It is not yet established whether he owned the car or not.

Some reports say the late Oola was related to the late Thomas Opira, the estranged husband of Omoro Woman member of parliament, Catherine Lamwaka.  Mr Opira died on Saturday due to a yet-to- be established cause. But relatives say he was diabetic.
