The management of Sir Samuel Baker School in Gulu have closed after a violent strike student strike at the school on Thursday evening.

The closer of the school followed a violent strike in which students who accused the school headmaster of incompetence and failure to hire ‘‘mercenaries ’’ to help the school during the just concluded inter-school athletic competition. ”Mercenaries” is a term used to refer to non-students paid to represent  the school in athletics events.

Mr. Flama Odong, a teacher at Sir Samuel Baker said the students began to strike between 7:00pm-8:00 Thursday evening.

The students blamed failure by their teacher to hire merchnaieis for their poor show at the  inter school athletics competition.

The inter-school athletic game started on Wednesday this week and ended on Thursday. The games took place at the Gulu University playgrounds since Pece Stadium, the traditional host, is undergoing rehabilitation.

The competition was won by St Joseph’s College Layibi followed by Negri College.

On Thursday evening, the rowdy students pelted the school administration, their dining and classrooms with stones, smashing glass windows leading to a decision by the school board to send all the 500 students in the school home.

Sir Samuel Baker school headmaster, Eric Johnson could not be reached for comment as he did not pick his phone.

Acholi Times understands the day for reopening of the school will be announced on the radio on a yet-to- be set date.
