Democratic Party (DP) party leaders and supporters have mourned their former President and Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito.
The veteran politician, business man and renowned property owner passed at Nakasero hospital in Kampala on Monday aged 83.
The late Ssebaana had been admitted at the hospital two weeks ago when he suffered a stroke paralyzing parts of his body and damaging a part of his brain.
Mr Uma Kerubino, the Gulu district DP Chairperson also DP Mobilizer for Acholi Sub-region told Acholi Times in an interview on Monday that Ssebaana was a nationalist who set a standard as uncompromised politician.
“Ssebaana has set an example and legacy of a true politician who wasn’t compromised, he stood in the party until his death,” Mr Uma said.
Uma noted that the deceased was also a unifying factor in the party which is currently divided.
“The party will surely miss Ssebaana, his death is a big blow to the
party… the country equally will miss his dedicated political loyalty,” added Uma.
DP stalwart and former Nwoya Member of Parliament Mr Zakari Olum, described the deceased as a loyal politician who stood by the people of Luwero despite intimidation.
“I have known Ssebaana for over 35 years, he has been a real stalwart in DP and a nationalist. He joined leadership not for himself but for the people, he wasn’t in leadership for money but for the people because he had already made his money,” Mr Olum said.
Olum praised Ssebaana for having contributed bringing peace in northern Uganda by calling on the Ugandan government to talk peace to the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) when war raged in northern Uganda.
The late Ssebaana will be buried at Kalule parish, Nyimbwa Sub county
Luwero district on Friday.
