Francesca Amony, a former aspirant for Youth Member of Parliament (MP) for northern region under the Democratic Party (DP) ticket was on Monday afternoon charged for allegedly torturing her two house helps.

Amony now District Woman Councilor representing Pece Division in Gulu Municipality appeared before Deogratious John Ssejemba, the Gulu Chief Magistrate charged with two counts of aggravated torture.

Prosecution led by William Bayo alleges that on July 25, 2017 at Ariaga sub-ward in Laroo division, the suspect used a hot flat iron connected to power to torture  her two underage house helps.

Prosecution contends that the suspect used a deadly weapon to torture the two girls.

The victims were identified before court as: Akello Acen, 13, and Flavia Anena, 17.

All were reported to be her housemaids to Francesca Amony.

Amony accused them of stealing her 62,000 shillings from her house where she had kept it.

When the charges were read to her, Amony admitted to committing the offense and questioned whether a flat iron is a deadly weapon.

Chief Magistrate Ssejemba entered a not guilty plea, something which did not go well with William Bayo, the State Prosecutor.

Amony later applied to be released on bail after presenting two sureties, Martin Oruu and Moses Laker, all members of DP.

But Bayo strongly objected to the bail request on grounds that Amony is arrogant and does not deserve to be released on bail adding that the suspect has already admitted to the offence.

The prosecutor also told the Chief Magistrate that they are in the process of amending the charges so the matter is referred to  the High Court.

However Chief Magistrate Ssejemba went ahead and released Amony on a non- cash bail of 500,000 shillings.

Her two sureties were each bonded on 1.2 million shillings.

The matter has been fixed for August 29, for hearing.

Amony is wife to Gulu Vice Chairman Simon Peter Oola.

Social media has over the past couple of days been awash with condemnation of Amony, a resident of Gulu municipality for her alleged act of torturing the maids.
