Women have shunned the Local Defence Unit (LDU) recruitment in Gulu and Omoro districts.
Uganda People People`s Defence Force-UPDF on Monday last week conducted recruitment of 400 LDU personnels in Gulu and Omoro districts.
The recruitment is part of the countrywide drive to recruit 13,000. Only 40 women turned up for the recruitment in both Gulu and Omoro.
Major Caesar Olweny, the 4th Division Army spokesperson said 1,000 turned for the exercise, majority of them men. Of these 250 were recruited from Gulu and 150 from Omoro, respectively.
Major Olweny explained that the recruitment was not about gender but qualification and willingness from the applicants.
He disclosed that the successful recruits will be taken to the UPDF forth division training wing at in Lugore, Palaro Sub County Gulu district for training.
The countrywide LDU recruitment exercise will run from 15th July to 31st of July.
The recruits are expected present valid national identity cards, be in good health, have a primary leaving or Uganda certificate of education certificates, and must be aged between 18 and 35 years.
