The National Forestry Authority (NFA) Gulu Branch is stuck with over 1000 bags of impounded charcoals.
The charcoal was impounded by environmental protection police early this month from Attiak Sub County in Amuru district as it was Kampala-bound in a lorry truck registration number UBE 285 D.
The charcoal was supposed to have been auctioned on Friday last week. However, the exercise was halted that very day based on a directive from the NFA Headquarters in Kampala on grounds that a formal complaint had been lodged by the owner(s) of the charcoal challenging the auctioning.
Bossy Haruna, a social worker at NFA Gulu halting auctioning of the impounded has meant that the charcoal and vehicle are still parked at the NFA offices in Gulu.
Last year authorities in Amuru district evicted over 100 illegal charcoal dealers from Attiak Sub County for indiscriminate cutting of trees for charcoal and timber.
Simon Peter Okoshi, the Deputy Commandant Environmental Protection Police Unit said that the operation against environmental degradation in Northern Uganda was launched in May last year and has seen several people arrested and hundreds of charcoal bags destroyed.
