Security has closed 12 lodges in Elegu Amuru district for defying the Presidential directive on combating coronavirus (Covid-19).

Elegu is bustling market located at the Uganda- South Sudan border. The Covid-19 case hospitalized at Adjumani hospital is said to have operated at the border point, trading in salt.

Authorities say the lodges were still operating even after President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday banned their operations in order to contain the spread of coronavirus in the country.

The closed lodges include Back to My Roots, Border Line, Miami and Acholi Dit, among others.

Elegu has about 50 lodges and guest houses. Majority of them had closed following the presidential directive.

Linda Agnes Auma, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner said on Friday that the lodges were closed on Thursday evening when security stormed the area and discovered that they had guests lodging.

Auma said that nobody was arrested during the operation however all doors to the rooms were locked and will only be opened after the 14 days have elapsed as per the presidential directive.

Michael Lakony, the Amuru district chairperson said that the lodges had been booked by mainly truck drivers from Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan and from West Nile.
