Police in Gulu has arrested a woman for murdering her step child identified Agenorwot Mercy.

Ms Ayot Florence is in police custody after she was arrested hiding in coo-pee, Bungatira sub county for the last 3 months.

According to the mother of the deceased, Ms Adong Sophia, she separated with her ex-husband husband Mr Oyet Patrick in 2008 due to domestic wrangles and went to her parent’s home.

She says that her ex-husband went to her parent’s home and took away their 10year old daughter without her knowledge and took her to his home in Awach Sub County where he was living with his new wife.

She says that the step mother (Ayot) on May 12, 2015 took away Agenorwot and left home for Gwengdia village where she hit the girl with a big stick smashing her skull.

Adong says, “The remains of my baby were discovered two weeks later and some of her body parts had been eaten by animals. She had decomposed beyond recognition.”

Police who were alerted tried in vain to contact the parents of the deceased and resolved to bury the infant at the public cemetery.

The mother of the deceased only knew about the death when she visited police and identified her child through her clothes.

Police later arrested her ex-husband and mounted a search Ayot who was on the run.

Ayot was arrested on Friday and is currently detained at Gulu central police station as more investigations are being conducted.

Police says that one of Ayot’s children confessed that it’s their mother who took their half sister to the bush where the deceased screamed until she died.

Adong says that this must have been a well-organized plan by the family of her ex-husband and the co-wife to have their child killed like a chicken.
