Pader woman Member of Parliament, Ms Okettayot Christine Doreen Lowila has tasked men in Northern Uganda to take the lead in championing women issues to promote coexistence which she says will lead to a great reduction in domestic violence.
Lowila said that many organizations organize pro-women workshops but fail to involve men.
This she said leads to women speaking to themselves and not impacting change.
She was last Wednesday speaking at Churchill courts hotel in Gulu during the Northern Uganda women leadership and land Governance conference organized by GWED-G and UN women
“When we talk here and fail to consider the men then all will be useless because we need to get men who advocate for women issues so that they can champion our issues like land,” the legislator said.
Ms Pamela Angwec, the executive Director of GWED-G said the women in Northern Uganda still suffer a lot when it comes to issues of owning land because the culture still stands a hindrance and many people fight them especially when their Husbands die.
But Gulu magistrate, Mr Paul Owino said that the courts have the widows as a priority in giving letter of administration especially when they are legally married and in cases where they had children.
Ms Linda Zedriga, a widow and retired magistrate who is currently the executive director of women, peace and security organization said women must stand together to achieve their land rights.
However, Gulu district police commander, Mr Martin Okoyo warned that women activism is good but that the activists should guide women on how to demand for their rights constitutionally.
He said police will not tolerate anything that is unlawful so the women should teach their colleagues the law so that they don’t fall victims of the law outside the conference room.
