Femrite, an association of women’s Writers in Uganda has asked primary schools in Northern Uganda to encourage pupils to begin reading simple story books during reading time
Ms Juliet Kushaba, the program manager Femrite made the statement at Gulu public primary school on Thursday during a primary school reading Tent project.
The event attracted that had about 10 primary schools which included, Unifat, Bright Valley, Police Primary, Gulu Public, Mary Immaculate, Layibi primary, Kirombe among others.
Kushaba said that the primary school reading tent is part of the ‘Tukosawa’ school writing clubs in secondary schools being implemented by the organization in Gulu and Kabale with support from the Danish Centre for Culture and Development
“This is just one of our initiatives targeting primary school pupils. It is still about building up reading and writing generation in the country,” She said.
The event comprises of Reading Luo and English competition where Akulu Rebecca, a primary six pupil of Gulu primary school won in the English reading competition while Amito Sheila grace of Kirombe Primary seven won in Luo reading.
Ms Lamwaka Beatrice, a celebrated author who wrote the ‘Butterflies dreams’ who was a facilitator during the program said reading tent is the beginning of promoting reading among children because it will make them love reading all subjects books.
“I think this will help the young children also decide on their future, they will try different areas because at this point in time the children do not know what they want to do in life. a good reading culture will help them in future even if they are doctors they can still go ahead to write because writing is not limited to writers,” Lamwaka told Acholi times.
All the 10 primary schools received a donation of reading books from various authors of Children books in Uganda.
