Mr Deogratius Ssejemba, the Gulu Chief Magistrate has sentenced a 21-year-old man to a 10 year jail term for stealing Shs70 million.
Mr Denis Adyera, a resident of Cuk Pa Oweka, Layibi Division, a Gulu town suburb was convicted on Monday morning on his own plea after admitting before court that indeed he stole the money.
Prosecutions led by Mr William Mbayo told court that around June this year, Adyera broke into the house of his aunt Ms Alice Angee before making away with Shs70 Million.
According to Mbayo, Adyera and his younger brother who was charged alongside him for the offence of theft later bought two sports bikes and a car with the stolen money.
Court heard that after the incident was reported to police, the pair was tracked down and found hiding in a hotel in Kampala on June 30th.
Police recovered only Shs2.5 Million out of the Shs70 Million.
Adyera explained to court that he was forced to steal the money because his aunt Angee was mistreating them as well as misusing his late father’s assets.
“What hurt most is our aunt refusing to take us to good schools. I was forced to drop out in Senior One,” He said.
Their aunt says she was very devastated after the incident.
While sentencing Adyera, the Magistrate noted that the long jail term sentence will serve as an opportunity for the convict who is turning into a hardened criminal.
Ssejemba adds that after completing his sentence, Adyera will become a responsible citizen.

Common people cant you see that these youngsters who are orphans were being mistreated by their deethoothing selfish aunt? She had 70m hidden in the house, but the duo were not atteding education. They had to drop out from school because of lack of school fees really? And the aunt has taken everthing their late father had for them is that fair? Im not condoning theft but since they have admitted the crime, and didn’t wastes time of judgment, they should be given a lighter sentence or community work. And for the aunt also to answer why she didn’t put them in school or started them a business with that money.
