The Deputy Secretary general of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Mr Richard Todwong who is also the Member of Parliament for Nwoya district has been dragged to the police for failing to compensate the death of a girl identified as Amida Adrifu.
On 3/4/2015, Todwong’s driver got involved in a nasty accident at Olayilong where Amida was knocked dead with a motorcycle being ridden by Todwong’s worker.
According to the father of the deceased, Mr. Yusuf Aduwani, after receiving the information that his daughter had perished in an accident, he organized for burial and the body was laid to rest.
He says that after the burial he contacted Todwong and his worker who at that time was released immediately from police cells, and requested to be compensated for the money he spent during the burial amounting to Shs3 million.
Yusuf says that Too-dwong gave him Shs1 million and promised that the 3 million will be given to him through the people he had delegated to handle the matter.
The people delegated were Mr Adyera Norbert and Mr Peter Ojigi, a cultural chief.
However, Yusuf says that he has on several occasions contacted Adyera and Ojigi but all in vain.
When contacted Rwot Ojigi said he was given only Shs800, 000 to give to the complainant.
‘‘This is a complete insult, how can they kill my daughter and refuse to even refund my burial expenses. More over I wanted the matter not to be blown out of proportion,’’ Yusuf stated.
“It is a pity that people in high positions of power and their associates can be free despite killing innocent children and nothing can be done to the suspects,” he said.
Rwot Ojigi howver said that Yusuf is free to go to police as the matter has become very difficult for him to handle.
In a text Message seen by our reporter in Yusuf’s phone sent by Todwong, the deputy Secretary General tells Yusuf to contact Ojigi and Adyera.
The father of the deceased said that he wants well-wishers to help him get compensation for his daughter but added that no amount of money that can replace his child.
According to cultural leaders, paying for the deceased known as ‘‘Culu Kwo’’ in Acholi is done when a foreigner kills somebody. He or she is required pay more than 36 cattle as compensation.
