Police in Amuru district are holding a woman in connection with the death of a 40-year-old man identified as Titus Anywar.
Margret Acayo, a resident of Pawel, Langeta parish in Atiak Sub County was arrested on Wednesday after Anywar died shortly after he visited her shrine.
Anywar had reportedly gone to seek treatment for alcoholism.
Police say the deceased was taken by his relatives to Acayo’s home on Tuesday night but he later died that very evening.
According to Police, Acayo is a renown doctor who has been treating people with concoctions of herbs.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa Region Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the suspect is known to have been treating people who are alcohol addicts.
Police say they will carry out a postmortem on the deceased before any charge is preferred against the witch doctor.
Meanwhile Acayo is still being held at Atiak Police Post for questioning.
Juliet Adoch, the District Chairperson for the National Traditional Healers, Herbalists and Birth Attendants Association for Acholi sub region warned witchdoctors against keeping patients in their homes instead of referring them to medical facility for appropriate treatment.
Adoch notes that a section of the herbalists are money hungry and keep clients in their homes even if their condition is deteriorating.
Adoch claims witch doctors who are committing offences are non registered members.
There are 180 registered traditional healers and herbalists who are operating in Acholi sub region alone.
