A group of NRM supporters said to be crime preventers on Tuesday attacked the Gulu woman Member of Parliament Betty Aol and Ronald Galiwango, a camera man with NTV.
The incident happened at Lalogi trading center in Omoro County Gulu District.
Trouble ensued after Ms Ocan who was on the campaign team of Dr Kizza Besigye accused NRM youth and crime preventers for holding a meeting at the venue that was supposed to be used by Besigye for his campaign rally. Besigye was from holding another rally at Opit trading centre also in Omoro County.
The NRM youth and crime preventers are said to have been mobilised by deputy speaker of parliament Jacob Oulanyah.
When Ms Ocan confronted them on why they were holding a meeting at a venue that was supposed to be used by Besigye, the NRM youth charged at the MP with sticks and stones and hit NTV cameramen Mr Galiwango who was filming the scuffle.
Mr Galiwango was chased and slapped by the youth who accused him of filming them illegally. All this happened under the watch of Oulanyah’s guards.
The fracas escalated into a big fight when FDC supporters rushed to the rescue of the NTV journalist only to be pelted with stones and clobbered with sticks.
Oulanyah was evacuated from the scene of his fracas by his security.
One of the NRM supporters speaking to Acholi Times on condition of anonymity said Mr Oulanyah had gathered them to inform them about his intention to begin campaigns in early January next year. He said their meeting was supposed to have been at Odek Sub-county headquarters but they changed to the venue where Besigye was supposed to hold his rally.
Ms Ocan in an interview with Acholi time said the groups was organized by Mr Oulanyah to so disrupt the Besigye’s campaign in Lalogi Sub County.
“This was purely an organized NRM militia who wanted to disorganize the FDC campaigns. We shall not bow down to them,” a bitter Mrs Ocan said.
Besigye in an interview condemned the attack it as a move plotted by the NRM.
The three time Presidential candidate later held his rally at Lalogi trading center before heading to Gulu Municipality to address a mammoth crowd that gathered at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu town.
Last week, a group of NRM youth in Ntungamo district attempted to block Go Forwards Amama Mbabazi from making a procession within the district resulting into a clash with Mbabazi’s guards.
