A 22 year old man suspect was yesterday found hanging on the ceiling of the police cell at Gulu Bus Park police outpost.
The man identified as Patrick Oweka is said to be a resident of Layibi Go Down in Layibi division.
He had been arrested on allegations that he had defiled his 17 year old cousin sister.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, Aswa regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident saying the deceased was taken into police custody at around 3pm on Monday and was at that time alone in the police cell.
Okema said when police brought in more suspects the next morning, they found Oweka had hanged himself using his trousers which he had attached to the ceiling board.
The police spokesman said investigation against the deceased was still incomplete.
Police usually order suspects to remove belts and shoes before being detained. But not their trousers.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the Gulu hospital mortuary.
According to a statement recorded at the police, Doreen Abalo, the complainant and mother of the allegedly defiled girl, Oweka had been warned on several occasions against defiling her cousin sister.
In her statement, Abalo said traditional rituals had even been performed on Oweka and the cousin sister to cleanse them as its against Acholi tradition to have sex with a cousin sister and vice versa.
