A somber mood hanged over Pope Paul V1 Anaka Secondary School on Friday after the death on Thursday of their their teacher, Walter Opiyo, 26.
Opiyo succumbed to injuries sustained in a Boda- Boda (motorcycle taxi) accident on Saturday last week along the Gulu- Koch Goma road, a short distance away from Graceland High School.
The late Opiyo’s motorcycle was knocked by a Diana Truck registration number UAS 361S as he travelled to Gulu town. A woman he was carrying on the motorcycle died on the spot.
Opiyo was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor with a broken leg and a serious head injury. He succumbed to the injuries from Lacor hospital yesterday.
“It’s a big blow to us,’’ said Mr Matthew Ottober Obol, the head teacher of Pope Paul V1 Anaka.
Mr Otober said the late Opiyo was a teacher of Physics and Chemistry.
‘‘It will be hard for the school to fill the gap he has left because he was such a hard working teacher.’’
The driver of the truck which knocked the late Opiyo’s motorcycle was reportedly drunk at the time of the accident. The driver identified as Justine Oloya has since been detained by police.
The late Opiyo is survived by an expectant wife. He will be buried tomorrow at Dima in Kiryandongo district.
