The Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has lauded the late Hon Daudi Ochieng for being an accomplished nationalist, orator and legislator who served his country without discrimination.
Mayiga made the remarks while speaking at the 50th memorial Anniversary of Late Ochieng, the former Kabaka Yeka Member of Parliament at the late Ochieng’s ancestral home at Aworanga village in Ongako Sub-county Gulu District on Wednesday.
Ochieng, an Acholi, served in Buganda Kingdom’s Lukiiko and earned a reputation as an eloquent debater. He died on June 1, 1966.
Mayiga travelled with four other Buganda ministers. He was joined by Acholi leaders notably the Acholi Paramount Chief Rwot David Onen Acana II, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah among others. It was Mayiga’s first visit as premier of Buganda in Acholi.

Controversial subjects like his motion in parliament on the famous gold and ivory scandal involving Col Amin
Mayiga added that Ochieng was a great friend of Buganda Kingdom and the country at large saying if Ochieng had not died young, he would have scored greater achievements.
The Buganda premier explained that Ochieng teaches Ugandans that their tribes should not stop them from loving one another as Ochieng loved Buganda.
The Acholi Paramount Chief lauded Buganda kingdom’s premier for his remarks on Ochieng, adding that the Acholi are open to future visits from Buganda to strengthen the relationship between the two tribes.
Tophie Ochieng, the eldest daughter to the late Ochieng said there is need to revive the love the Buganda kingdom had for her late dad to rebuild relationship between Buganda Kingdom and Acholi Chiefdom.
On Monday a Memorial lecture was held at Kakanyero Hotel in Gulu Municipality in honor of late Ochieng in which members of his family, friends, politician and the public attended.
About Ochieng
The Late Ochieng was born in 1925 to Rwot Lacito Oketch from the clan of Koch in Gulu District.
He was a member of the Buganda Lukiko (Parliament) who was elected in 962.
He was influential in the unification of Kabaka Yaka and UPC that led to formation of the first independent Ugandan government on October 10 1962.
In February 4 1966, he moved a motion on the controversial ‘Congo Gold loot’ scandal that implicated the former Prime Minister Apollo Milton Obote and the then Deputy Army Commander Col Idi Amin Dada. Ends
