The Buganda Kingdom Katikiro( Prime Minister), Charles Peter Mayiga has made his first visit to Gulu district where he is attending the 50th memorial anniversary of the late Daudi Ocheing, the former Kabaka Yaka Member of Parliament.
Katikiro Mayiga arrived in Gulu yesterday.
He was welcomed in the district by the Acholi Ker Kalkwaro Premier Ambrose Ola who accompanied him to Aworanga village in Ongako Sub-county, where the Memorial service for late Ocheing is being held.
Late Hon Daudi Ocheng, an Acholi who served the interest of the Buganda Kingdom and earned a reputation for eloquence died in 1966 at Mulago hospital, aged 41.
The late Ochieng is famous for moving the ‘‘Congo loot gold’’ in parliament which implicated former Prime Minister Milton Apollo Obote and the then deputy army commander Col Idi Amin Dada on gold said to have been looted from Congo.
Late Ocheing was born in 1925 to Rwot Lacito Oketch from the clan of Koch in Gulu District.
He was elected member of the Buganda Lukiko in 1962. His election as a member of the Lukiko was a reward for his instrumental role in the marriage between Kabaka Yeka and the Uganda People’s Congress Party (UPC) that led to formation of the first independent Ugandan government on October 10 1962.
Daudi Ocheng was one of the only three non-Buganda along with Visram, an Asian, Mr James Simpson who served as members of the Buganda Lukiko at the National Assembly.
At the time of filing this story, the memorial prayer was still going on at Awaranga, at the home of the late Ochieng. Mayiga laid a wreath on his gave. Also present at the event is Dr Martin Aliker, family member of the late Ochieng family and Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.
On Monday a memorial lecture was held in memory of Daudi Ochieng at Kakanyero hotel in Gulu town. The event was attended by the late Ochieng’s children, family members, friends, local leaders and members of the public.
